Since October 2002, Toronto Arts Coalition has celebrated important successes in increasing awareness of and funding to Toronto arts.

JANUARY 2006

The Coalition works to get arts on the agenda of the federal election by contacting all 88 Toronto area candidates to respond to our questions about supporting the arts. Responses are posted on our website along with candidate’s email addresses and the arts platforms of all the parties (Conservative, Green, Liberal, NDP)

DECEMBER 2005

Toronto Arts Coalition publishes the first annual Holiday Shopping Guide containing valuable information on where to shop in Toronto to purchase gifts that support the City’s artists and arts organizations. Click here to view the guide.

NOVEMBER 2005

Toronto Arts Coalition actively supported the Canadian Arts Coalition in their fight to have the government increase funding to the Canada Council. On November 23rd, the Government of Canada made the historic announcement that it will invest $306 million over the next three years in the Canada Council - which meets the goal! Thanks to members of the Coalition who communicated their support to our politicians.

MARCH 2005

On February 28, Toronto City Council finalized its 2005 budget. Included in disbursements was an increase of $400,000 to Toronto Arts Council’s cultural grants program. This increase, which brings TAC’s total grants budget to $8.9 million, offers an opportunity to make some significant investments in our arts community; investments from which Toronto as a whole will benefit. Coalition members wrote to their Councillors and the Mayor to ask for support of TAC’s request and clearly made an impression. Despite extremely difficult financial circumstances facing City Council this year, Councillors held strong to their support for the arts.

SEPTEMBER 2004

As part of the 18th annual ArtsWeek festivities, Toronto Arts Coalition and Mayor David Miller hosted the Mayor’s Giant ArtsWeek 04 KickOff at Nathan Phillips Square.

Mayor Miller was joined on stage by over 40 prominent Toronto artists, including Russel Smith, Eve Egoyan, Allan King, Susan Swan, June Callwood and Margaret Atwood – who introduced the Mayor. Mayor Miller gave a passionate speech addressing the importance of supporting artists individually and collectively through our governments.
Over 60 artists and arts organizations were on the square, showcasing their talents to the 4000 people who visited during the day. Molly Johnson headlined the mainstage with a much anticipated vocal performance.
The enthusiastic display of public support and media coverage for this event made it the perfect way to launch ArtsWeek 04. The event was co-sponsored by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and RBC Financial Group.

JULY 2004

Toronto Arts Coalition presented a lively panel discussion, “Under the Radar: Where are Toronto arts in local media?” on July 8 at the Toronto Fringe Festival tent at the TRANZAC Club. Hosted by local performer and publicist, Keith Cole, the event brought together a mix of artists, editors and producers to discuss the state of arts coverage in Toronto.

JUNE 2004

Toronto Arts Coalition, in association with Toronto members of the Canadian Conference of the Arts (CCA) quizzed federal candidates in Toronto ridings on their positions on arts issues and posted their responses on the Coalition site.

APRIL 2004

City Council approved the City’s Budget Advisory Committee’s recommendation to give Toronto Arts Council (TAC) a much needed funding increase of $400,000. This figure will be part of Mayor Miller’s promise of a $2 million increase to TAC during his term. The Coalition will act as a watchdog to ensure this promise is kept!

MARCH 2004

The City’s Budget Advisory Committee recommended an increase of $400,000 to TAC. Coalition members contacted their representatives to encourage them to consider Toronto Arts Council’s request of an additional $1 million to TAC grants programs. While less than requested, the recommended amount is an important shot in the arm for Toronto artists.

FEBRUARY 2004

Toronto’s arts community received a strong endorsement February 10 when the Economic Development and Parks Committee of the City of Toronto recommended a $1 million funding increase to TAC for a total 2004 budget request of $9,907,930. In September 2003 Toronto Arts Coalition produced the Great Toronto Arts Debate at the CBC Atrium that some say marked the turning point for David Miller in his campaign for mayor. It was the largest attended mayoral debate during the 2003 City electoral race and received coverage from Toronto Star, Globe & Mail, National Post, Toronto Sun and CBC TV.

FEBRUARY 2003

Coalition members filled Toronto’s Council Chamber in support of Toronto Arts Council’s budget submission request for $1 million. For the first time since amalgamation, the City granted artists, funded through TAC, an increase $200,000. Toronto artists and their organizations have lost $1.4 million to inflation since amalgamation
