TORONTO’S ARTS SECTOR
RECEIVES ENDORSEMENT THROUGH TORONTO STAR BUDGET GAME
In case you missed it, the final report on the Toronto
Star You Be the Budget Chief game found that arts funding
is one of the most popular choices among women and Toronto
renters.
The game encouraged Star readers to make virtual additions
or cuts to City and City-funded programs on the eve of the
municipal budget vote. The Star reported on April 9th that
more than 2000 people took part in its budget challenge.
According to the same article, “there were pronounced
differences between male and female participants, with men
emphasizing efforts to clean up the city, both literally
and figuratively…by contrast, women were more likely
to favour spending on arts and culture, as well as social
programs.”
At its April 19-28 session, City Council voted in favour
of a $400,000 increase to Toronto Arts Council’s budget
as recommended the City’s Budget Advisory Committee
and, and an additional $323,800 to arts organizations funded
through the City’s Culture Office.
