This is the Toronto Arts Coalition Newsletter – a newsletter for those who care about the health of the arts in Toronto. You are receiving this Newsletter because you subscribed when you joined Toronto Arts Coalition. Our collective voice and efforts can raise awareness of the importance of our artists to our society and ensure they have the tools they need to do their best work.

500 arts supporters jammed the Atrium of the CBC to hear the five front-running mayoral candidates explain their arts platforms and answer eight tough, wide-ranging questions that were put to them by moderator Andy Barrie of CBC Radio One’s Metro Morning and several persons in the audience.

Barbara Hall, Tom Jakobek, David Miller, John Nunziata and John Tory all showed up at The Great Toronto Arts Debate, organized by Toronto Arts Coalition in co-operation with CBC. Thanks to all Coalition members who participated!

All candidates referred to our Great Arts = Great City plan to increase operating revenues. Several endorsed it outright, a very important development insofar as the plan covers everything we’re trying achieve for Toronto arts over the next 10 years.

Members of the Coalition may wish to check out the questions asked and pose some of them to candidates running for Council in their respective wards. This event went a long way to put Toronto arts on the municipal agenda. Coalition members have it within their power to make the arts an important issue in the coming municipal election. It will be worth the trouble.

Don’t forget to vote. Be sure that your representatives in the next parliament— MPP, Minister of Culture and Premier--know what you want them to do to improve the health of the arts and that you are paying attention. Remember, one of the most frequent things we hear from politicians is that nobody ever talks to them about the arts.

With City elections pending, there is a growing need to get our message of support for Toronto’s arts out to those running for office.

Mayoral candidates are in the process of forming their policy platforms. Every message they receive now may play a part in determining the shape and direction of the next city government. So we need as many voices speaking out in support of the arts as possible.

This is why Toronto Arts Coalition is asking for your help recruiting new members. If you know concerned arts supporters who would like to join Toronto Arts Coalition, please forward them our new email postcard. To forward our postcard, click here:
