edition #3

This is the Toronto Arts Coalition Newsletter – a newsletter for those who care about the health of the arts in Toronto. Our collective voice and efforts can raise awareness of the importance of our artists to our society and ensure they have the tools they need to do their best work. This Newsletter is also available via email to individuals who join Toronto Arts Coalition.

TORONTO ARTS IN THE WORKPLACE - YOU ARE INVITED

Toronto Arts Council Foundation invites you, as a member of the Coalition, to the opening reception of our third Toronto Arts in the Workplace exhibit on Monday, April 7th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 141 Bathurst St, Suite 101. These openings are an opportunity to share a glass of wine together, see some of the art made in our City and meet with artists and fellow Coalition members.

Toronto Arts in the Workplace is an element of our Great Arts=Great City initiative. The program is designed to increase the amount of art displayed in workplace settings. More Toronto art in the workplace (by living Toronto artists) directly increases operating revenues to artists, a primary objective of Great Arts = Great City.

For more details, and to view the list of participating artists, click this link.

Please RSVP, as early as possible, to Michelle Parson at michelle@torontoartscouncil.org or 416-392-6800. Hope to see you there.

CITY COUNCIL VOTES ON TORONTO ARTS COUNCIL 2003 BUDGET SUBMISSION

On February 28th, Toronto City Council voted 36-6 in favour of a $200,000 increase to Toronto Arts Council’s funding in its 2003 budget.

While this figure falls short of Toronto Arts Council’s request for $1.4 million in additional arts sector funding, it is still an important step forward as there has not been a funding increase to the Council in the five years since amalgamation.

The overwhelming majority vote from City Councillors is thanks in no small part to the efforts of you – Toronto Arts Coalition members. To all of you who contacted your councillor or came down to City Hall to show your support for the arts at the City Council budget meeting, we would like to thank you for your efforts. Clearly our elected officials are listening to your united voice.
