Amadeus Choir

Amadeus Choir

Toronto is extremely fortunate to have such a vibrant choral community. A crucial part of our dynamic choral scene is the auditioned, 100-member Amadeus Choir, which has been under the exquisite leadership of Conductor and Artistic Director Lydia Adams for over 20 years.

This pre-eminent choral group was founded more than 30 years ago. The Amadeus Choir has become well known for its high quality singing of rich, full sounds, and exceptional programming. The choir features the work of well known and emerging Canadian as well as international composers. The Amadeus choir performs a regular season in Toronto, including major choral works with instrumental ensembles or full orchestra. It has been Choir-in-Residence at the George Weston Recital Hall since 1993.

The Amadeus Choir has been the recipient of the prestigious biennial CBC Choral Competition, winning awards in 1992, 1994 and 1996. Because of the choir’s semi-professional status they are no longer eligible to compete.

Lydia Adams has made a significant contribution to choral repertoire when in 1987 she created the Choir's Annual Christmas Carol and Chanukah Song Writing Competition which has grown to include submissions from around the world. Composers of all ages are inspired to write new works, contributing to Canada's outstanding choral tradition. Winning compositions are performed at the Amadeus Choir's annual holiday concert in December.

Toronto Arts Council has been proud to support Amadeus Choir since 1999.
