TORONTO ARTS COUNCIL RECEIVES
$400,000 INCREASE TO ITS CULTURAL GRANTS PROGRAM FROM TORONTO
CITY COUNCIL
On February 28, Toronto City Council finalized its 2005
budget. Included in disbursements was an increase
of $400,000 to TAC’s cultural grants program.
This increase, which brings TAC’s total grants budget
to $8.9 million, offers an opportunity to make some significant
investments in our arts community; investments from which
Toronto as a whole will benefit.
Many Toronto Arts Coalition members have written their
Councillors and the Mayor during the past weeks to ask for
support of TAC’s request. Clearly, you have made an
impression. Despite extremely difficult financial circumstances
facing City Council this year, Councillors held strong to
their support for the arts.
You, as a member of Toronto Arts Coalition, already know
that one of the best things about Toronto is our vibrant
arts scene. Artists in Toronto continue to produce exceptional
work. We can all be proud of the contribution our artists
make to the quality of life in Toronto, the opportunities
for volunteers and youth within their neighbourhoods, the
inspirational and entertaining work presented every day
of the year and the many accompanying economic benefits
to the tourism and hospitality industries.
So, now that City Council has taken the courageous step
of championing the arts, it wouldn’t hurt to thank
them. Send a note to the Mayor
or your
Councillor. Don’t forget to include your home
address so that they know that you are one of their constituents.
