ARTSWEEK O4 KICKOFF AT
NATHAN PHILLIPS SQUARE
Margaret Atwood, Molly Johnson and June Callwood, along
with scores of local artists, stood behind David Miller
at Nathan Phillips Square on September 23 to mark the KickOff
of ArtsWeek 04.
Fifteen hundred people, including artists, managers, politicians,
business leaders and media, came to the Square to hear the
Mayor
speak and to enjoy performances and visual displays
by local artists. The event was in celebration of the launch
of ArtsWeek 04, which ran from September 23 through October
3.
“I want to take this opportunity today to reaffirm
my commitment, and that of the City Council, to working
with and in the cultural community to ensure that the arts
continue to thrive. We must not and will not take our artistic
community for granted,” said the Mayor.
The Mayor spoke about investing in public art, heritage
buildings, youth-at-risk arts projects and affordable housing/work
space for artists on a rejuvenated waterfront. He also announced
the City’s plans for a year-long celebration of Toronto’s
arts and culture in 2006.
Toronto Arts Coalition presented the Mayor’s Giant
ArtsWeek KickOff before an audience of over 1,500 between
noon and 3pm on September 23. The event was covered by City
TV and WTSS-Buffalo, and was reported on the front page
of the Toronto Star the following day. Last year during
ArtsWeek, Toronto Arts Coalition presented the Great Toronto
Mayoral Debate, the largest attended Mayoral debate of the
2003 election.
ArtsWeek is an 11 day celebration of the arts in Toronto,
encouraging Torontonians to get off the couch and into our
local art galleries, performance spaces and alternative
venues that showcase our artists. ArtsWeek 2005 will take
place September 22 to October 2.
