TORONTO CELEBRATES ARTSWEEK
04
ArtsWeek was off to a brilliant start when Mayor Miller
and hundreds of people kicked off the 11-day celebration
of the arts at Nathan Phillips Square on September 23.
“…Toronto Mayor David Miller launched this
year’s edition of ArtsWeek by delivering
a striking message to excited leaders of the city’s
cultural community that those dark days are over,”
reported
Star columnist Martin Knelman.
ArtsWeek, an annual celebration of the arts, was produced
this year for the first time by Toronto Arts Council Foundation.
ArtsWeek promoted hundreds of presenters producing a wide
range of events that included Yo-Yo Ma at Roy Thomson Hall,
art walks along St. Clair Avenue, dance performances at
Toronto Eaton Centre, an art exhibition by Canadian Opera
Company staff, tours of the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres,
The Word on the Street, studio tours presented by Scarborough
Arts Council, the Cabbagetown Film Festival, Planet in Focus,
to name a few.
Toronto
Arts Online, which provides year-round event listings,
offered residents and tourists one-stop access to up-to-date
information.
650,000 ArtsWeek brochures were distributed to cultural
and business venues in Toronto, Rochester, Buffalo, various
other Ontario communities and the Niagara Penninsula.
ArtsWeek was promoted on CBC Television and Radio, CIUT,
CFRB, WTSS Buffalo, Rogers Television, City TV, Metro daily
news, Toronto Community News, EYE, toronto.com, WHERE Toronto
magazine, Toronto Life, 24 Hours, and many more.
ArtsWeek is a celebration of the arts in Toronto that encourages
residents to get off their couches and take in the art in
their city. It also encourages visitors to discover Toronto
arts not necessarily on the tourist radar.
ArtsWeek 2005 takes place September 22 to October 2. Mark
it in your calendars. Plan special ArtsWeek events. Any
questions, contact ArtsWeek@torontoartscouncil.org.
