City Budget and Advocacy Update

Toronto City Council passed the new taxes on October 22, under a compromise plan put forward by Councillor Mark Grimes (a TAC Board member).
This is positive news for the arts community for a couple of reasons:

  1. City Council is now fully aware that Torontonians feel strongly about their city services, including the arts
  2. Toronto artists and organizations were a significant factor in the debate, clearly demonstrating the value of coordinated advocacy

So - thank you to everyone who helped, who came to City Hall, who emailed, wrote and telephoned your councillors.

It would be nice to let the Mayor (mayor_miller@toronto.ca) and your City Councillor know that you appreciate their efforts.  In particular, Councillor Mark Grimes (Councillor_Grimes@toronto.ca) deserves recognition for forging the compromise.

The next big issue will be pressuring the provincial government to meet Toronto half way and reduce some of the fiscal burden it has placed on municipalities.  Watch this space for suggestions for provincial action.

In the meantime, please give yourself due credit for your efforts on behalf of the arts and this city!
