1. What role do the arts play in your life?
The art form I'm most interested in is music. I attend concerts of Tafelmusik and the Gryphon Trio. I purchased CDs by the Lafayette String Quartet and the Quatuor Molinari (playing the string Quartets of Murray Schafer). I'm also interested in non-Canadian artists performing in Toronto.

I enjoy the Art Gallery of Ontario, the fFIDA dance festival, the Beaches Jazz Festival, and the Festival of Friends Folk Festival.

When I lived in Vancouver, I attended the Vancouver East Cultural Centre Chamber Music Series and the Vancouver Folk Music Festival.

2. What role do the arts play in keeping people healthy?
Art is not merely individual expression. Because an artist is always a member of the society he or she belongs to, art is an act of sharing of ideas and emotions. It is this sharing that contributes to our mental well-being.

3. Why is it important that Toronto have a healthy arts sector?
Art is the spirit of a community. One of the major missions of the Green Party is to build communities. Although we enjoy art forms created elsewhere, Torontonians also need local expressions.

The availability of art from other parts of the world in Toronto keeps us in touch with others in the global village.

In addition, cultural activities enhance our economy and promote tourism.

4. Does your party believe that Canadian content and ownership should be protected in our broadcasting industry?
Intellectual properties should be protected. Without protection, artists would soon be discouraged from further creations. As a result, Canada suffers.

5. Our artists help make our society prosperous, yet many of them work and live in relative poverty. How can the Federal Government assist in returning some of that prosperity to our artists?
The Green Party will expand arts funding mechanisms to include smaller, community based, participatory arts programs.

6. Do you support federal investment in Canada’s arts sector?
a. Does investment in the arts produce a health dividend? An educational dividend? A public safety dividend?

Absolutely.

b. If elected, would you vote to increase funding to the arts sector through The Canada Council? Through Department of Canadian Heritage?
Yes. Probably through multiple agencies to address diverse needs.

c. Do you support provision of stable, adequate, multi-year arts funding?
Yes. Having to spend much time continuously to apply for funding is a major distraction. Besides, significant projects cannot proceed without long-term commitment in funding. The Green Party thinks in the long-term.
