1. What role do the arts play in your
life?
The Arts play a central role in my life. I have always been
a serious music lover particularly opera and symphonic music.
I have sat on the boards of symphonies, chamber music presenters
(Music Toronto), ballet and theatre companies, and an art
gallery.
2. What role do the arts play in keeping people healthy?
I fully subscribe to the view that the arts keep us intellectually,
emotionally, and spiritually healthy.
3. Why is it important that Toronto have a healthy arts
sector?
Toronto needs a lively creative sector for all the reasons
Richard Florida and Glen Murray suggest. Creative communities
where the arts flourish are dynamic and vibrant communities.
4. Does your party believe that Canadian content and
ownership should be protected in our broadcasting industry?
Yes
5. Our artists help make our society prosperous, yet
many of them work and live in relative poverty. How can the
Federal Government assist in returning some of that prosperity
to our artists?
We can support our artists three ways: a) by recognizing their
special needs in the taxation field (i.e. visual artists);
b) by supporting less commercial and popular artists through
the Canada Council; (c) by supporting professional artists
properly through grants to professional symphonies, dance
companies, theatre companies etc.
6. Do you support federal investment in Canada’s
arts sector?
• Does investment in the arts produce a health dividend?
An educational dividend? A public safety dividend?
• If elected, would you vote to increase funding to
the arts sector through The Canada Council? Through Department
of Canadian Heritage?
• Do you support provision of stable, adequate, multi-year
arts funding?
Yes. yes. yes. yes. yes. yes. yes.
